I originally wrote this for Barb in February of 1970, just three weeks after I’d met her, and I still sing it to her regularly. Every now and then, I want to change the words to add some “seasoning” to lyrics that were written when I was only 19 years old.  I tried to turn it into a “This Place” kind of song, but the more I fussed with it, the more I realized that it was wrong to change it. So I left it alone.

The song just means so much to me the way it is, because it captured those true feelings and thoughts that I was feeling back then.  It is one of my all-time favorite songs because it takes me back to the time when “Like” changed to “Love” and “Two” became “One”.

I reached out to touch her . . . and . . . smiling, she came to me.

She understands my smile.  And I want to hide awhile . . . in that world behind her eyes.

 

And “Together” we can stop and feel.  Make life seem more real.

I want to smile . . . and be alive . . . for her.

 

The joy to see her living . . . her smile, to me, is the sun.

And to know that we keep on giving . . . the little things that make us . . . “One”.

 

At last, “Oneness” is here.  Inside, I can feel It . . . It’s near.

And life is grinning in my heart.

 

Share our joys and share our sorrows . . . live todays . . . and dream tomorrows.

Be my hope and be my dreams . . . when . . . the day has no hope and Time has no dreams.

 

And “Together” we can stop and feel.  Make life seem more real.

I want to smile . . . and be alive . . . for her.
