Track 20 – I Wish I’d Known Him More Than Just the Way I Do

One evening, around 1979, while we were living in Holliston, Massachusetts, we experienced a long and beautiful snowfall. The silence and the quiet mood that snow brings to me inspired me to write, so I stayed up all night writing this song, about how I wished that I could have known Jesus more than just the way that I know Him today. It must have been easier to believe in a person that you could see, talk to, take walks with, share a joke with, than it is to believe 2000 years later in a person that you have never met.  Thus, the song evolved “I Wish I’d Known Him More Than Just the Way I Do”. I like the way I know Jesus, but I am still envious of those who knew Him in a more personal way.

Just as the sun was coming up that next morning, the telephone rang and it was the priest from St. Mary’s Catholic Church there in Holliston. He called to ask me if I would play guitar later that day for a service being held for a teenager, Gino, who had died from leukemia. I said that I would, and I asked the priest what his homily or message was going to be about. He said that he had been up most of the night thinking about it, and that he was going to talk about how he wished that he had known young Gino more than just the way he did.

I will always remember that moment and that feeling when it hit me that the two of us had each stayed up all night, one writing a song, the other writing a homily, about the same concept but a different application. It still sends chills down my back even today, thinking about that night, that bright snowy day, and singing this song at Gino’s service. I never met Gino. other than through this song, which is dedicated to all of those people that we wished we had known better . . . and for the energy to do something about it.

I Wish I’d Known Him More Than Just the Way I Do (6:10)

Jesus walked between the pines along the hills.  He tasted water, fresh and cold, from mountain streams.

He felt the tingle of the rain against His face . . . you know, He was a lot like you and me.

He was a lot like you and me.

Can I be more than I am?  Am I doing all (that) I can?

Could I love Him more than I already do?

Lord, help me be more than I am.

He knelt to smell the nectar of daffodils in spring.  He’d take a deep breath and curl a grin across His lip.

Sometimes He’d chuckle at the children and their ways . . . you know, He was a lot like you and me.

He was a lot like you and me.

Can I be more than I am?  Am I doing all (that) I can?

Could I love Him more than I already do?

Lord, help me be more than I am.

He probably whistled notes . . . not knowing where they’d go.  Or hummed a song beneath His breath from time to time.

He often sat in thought with just a smile upon His face . . . you know, He was a lot like you and me.

He was a lot like you and me.

Can I be more than I am?  Am I doing all (that) I can?

Could I love Him more than I already do?

Lord, help me be more than I am.

I read His story in the Bible . . . just the other day . . . about how His life was short and folks missed Him when He died.

“Now that He’s gone”, they said, “What shall we ever do?” . . . you know, they were a lot like me and you.

They often wondered what to do.

Can I be more than I am?  Am I doing all (that) I can?

Could I love Him more than I already do?

Lord, help me be more than I am.

We are inspired to be more than we have been.  We are called to believe in what we have not seen.

Time is precious as He must have understood.  Time is precious as we search for what He understood.

Can I be more than I am?  Am I doing all (that) I can?

Could I love Him more than I already do?

Lord, help me be more than I am.

I wish I’d know Him . . . walked beside Him . . . shared a joke.

I wished we’d talked along the banks of Galilee.

I’d love to hear Him tell a parable or two.  I wish I’d known Him more than just the way I do.

I wish I’d known Him more than just the way I do.

Can I be more than I am?  Am I doing all (that) I can?

Could I love Him more than I already do?

Lord, help me be more than I am.

I wish I’d know Him more than just the way I do.
